Wife’s Birthday Maple Peppermill #109

May 15, 2009

My wife was disappointed when she didn’t get a peppermill for Christmas.  So, to keep myself out of the dog house I turned her a mill for her birthday in March.

The blank for this mill literally came from the firewood pile.  My neighbor gave it to me to try and turn.  I was in awe when I first cut the blank out on the bandsaw, it had this wonderful curly grain along with some spalting.

After I turned the mill I coated it with some Danish Oil.  I thought the grain was wonderful before, but with the Danish Oil it is magnificent!  I let the oil cure and then finished the mill with 10 coats of polyurethane and buffed it out once that was cured.

I love how surprised I was at the grain in this piece of firewood.

I use ceramic mechanisms so they can be used for pepper or salt.
