First Bowl off Mustard Monster #119

December 30, 2009

Here is the first bowl I turned on the new PM 3520. It is Maple burl about 5 inches by 2.5 inches and wall thickness of 3/16″. I finished it with 3 coats of Tung oil then Beall buffed it. When I brought it in to show LOML she said don’t you have something bigger to turn, you bought that lathe that can turn 20″ and this is what you bring me!  I had to give it a good test run before digging in.

LOL – sounds like my wife!

Very nice bowl – VERY NICE LATHE!

Does the headstock rotate out too?
I noticed the overbed swing had some decent clarence and here you say it can do a 20″ piece. I don’t tend to work any bigger than that myself, but I have to rotate out to get bigger than 16″.

No, the headstock does not rotate out, but it does slide to the end. I purchased the 18″ extension witch can be mounted lower on the end to give a 34″ swing!!
So far I have only gone as big as 12″, but I know I want to try larger. I have some wonderful black walnut waiting to be roughed out.
